Aims of Organisation:
Aoibhneas Women’s Refuge is committed to providing secure
crisis accommodation, relevant information, emotional support,
counselling and an outreach service to all women and children
residents and callers to the helpline as required. The refuge
promotes a philosophy of empowerment, unconditional respect,
sensitivity and strict confidentiality viv a vis both residents
and callers at all times.
The refuge houses 10 purpose-built family units with their
own kitchen and bathroom; a children’s playroom; a large
kitchen and dining area and a communal lounge.
Services currently available at the refuge
include the provision of emotional support; advice on practical
considerations such as legal, housing and welfare issues;
referrals to outside agencies; and counselling from qualified
and accredited practitioners. Aoibhneas also employs an outreach
worker to provide support to women and their children once
they move on from refuge.
Future plans include refurbishment work at
the refuge, for which a €50,000 grant was awarded at
the end of 2003, the extension of the refuge’s counselling
service for women off-site, and the development of a counselling
service for children who have experienced or witnessed violence
in the home.
